Why Tutoring Works in Math. It’s Not Just About the "A"

One of the most common questions I hear from parents is:
“Can you help my child get an A?”

I get it. Grades matter. But to really understand why tutoring works, we have to look beyond just the report card.

Tutoring isn’t a magic fix.  It’s a process.  It’s a partnership between the student and the tutor. Both have to put in the effort.

As one parent once told me (and she nailed it):

“It’s up to my child to do the work. The tutor is there to guide, encourage, motivate, and keep them on track.”

Exactly.


When students do what they’re supposed to do, like show up consistently, put in their best effort, and reflect on mistakes, they do get results.  But the progress comes from learning, not shortcuts.

 

Grades Matter, But They Don’t Tell the Whole Story

 

I completely understand why grades are a big focus.  They impact college applications and scholarships.

 

But here’s something I’ve seen again and again:
Students who focus only on the marks and getting the “right” answer often miss the bigger picture.

 

They study what they think will be on the test. They try to memorize steps instead of understanding concepts.  And while that might work for a quiz or two, it doesn’t stick.

 

When the focus shifts to actually understanding the material, grades naturally follow.  Once students know how to think through a problem, they’re more prepared for whatever gets thrown at them.

Real Progress: Ryan’s Story

 

Let me tell you about one Pre-Calculus / Foundations of Math 10 student.  We’ll call him Ryan.

 

At first, Ryan wasn’t sure tutoring would make a difference. He’d tried to manage on his own, like a lot of students do. But in Grade 10, he started regular sessions with me.

 

One of the first things we noticed was that Ryan struggled with what I’d call “math intuition.”  For many students, regardless of age, there’s a kind of “common sense” reasoning they apply to math problems. But a lot of the time, that intuition leads them in the wrong direction.

 

A classic example? Thinking 1/2 is smaller than 1/3 just because 2 is smaller than 3. It seems reasonable until you learn how fractions actually work.

 

Our whole year was about working through those kinds of intuitive missteps and replacing them with more accurate thinking.  Ryan knew he was supposed to draw a diagram for word problems, but he’d jump to drawing a triangle just because the topic was trigonometry, not because the question called for the triangle he drew.

 

Ryan started tutoring with me in preparation for his Unit 2 test.  In our sessions, I guided him through strategies: slowing down, interpreting the question, thinking about what kind of diagram fit the problem, and building better problem-solving habits.

 

To be honest, his intuition still wasn’t perfect by the end of the year.  But I did what I always do in sessions.  I tried to meet him where he was, taught the skills, asked the probing questions, and corrected the habits.  And sometimes, as a tutor, I’m not sure what difference I’m really making in the moment.

 

But then, at the end of the year, his mom sent me a photo of his report card.  Clearly, he was applying what he’d been learning!

 

Here’s how his grades progressed:

  • Unit 1 (before tutoring): 73%

  • Unit 2 (started tutoring): 89%

  • Unit 3: 86%

  • Unit 4: 92%

  • Unit 5: 91%

  • Unit 6: 99%

 

What a Typical Math Session Looks Like

 

Every student is different, so my sessions aren’t scripted.

 

I’m responsive in real time.  I look at how the student is thinking, what part of the problem is tripping them up, and how I can bridge the gap between where they are and actually finishing the question with understanding.

 

Sometimes, no matter how I explain it, it doesn’t click.  That means we’ve hit a deeper gap that needs to be filled.

 

If the student is working through school math, I focus on helping them keep up with class while also filling in any weak spots I notice along the way.

 

But sometimes, a parent tells me, “Just teach them whatever you think they need.”  In that case, the student isn’t coming to tutoring for help with current assignments. They’re here to improve their overall math skills.

 

That gives me more flexibility to choose what we focus on, figure out where the gaps are, and build a stronger foundation.  

 

These sessions are a bit different. The goal isn’t necessarily to raise a test score but to help the student understand more and feel more confident about math.

 

How Parents Can Support Math Growth at Home

 

You don’t need to be a math expert to support your child, especially once they’re in high school.  Most parents aren’t going to understand the details of a student’s strengths and weaknesses in precalculus.  That’s totally fine.

 

Here’s what is helpful:

 

  • Normalize getting stuck. Struggling through math problems is normal.  In fact, it’s where the growth happens.

 

  • Ask for the teen’s perspective. If a grade is lower than expected, don’t jump to blame. Ask them what they think happened. Their reflection is valuable.

 

  • Encourage communication. Remind your child that asking questions, getting help, and staying curious are signs of a strong student.

 

Why Tutoring Works

Tutoring is not a shortcut to an A.  It works because it helps students build real skills, confidence, and clarity.  Students learn how to think, problem-solve, and understand.
