These gaps can lead to frustration, lower confidence, and confusion in class. The good news is that with the right approach, you can learn how to fill in math gaps so your child can succeed. When students start to feel solid in math, that confidence often spills into other subjects too.
Math gaps are missing skills or knowledge from earlier grades that make it harder to understand what is being taught now.
Because math is cumulative, a gap from Grade 7 or 8 can follow a student all the way into high school. If it is never addressed, each new topic becomes harder to grasp.
Look for signs like:
Mistakes with basic procedures
Struggling with operations like multiplying, dividing, or simplifying fractions even though these should be routine by now. One small error early in the steps can throw off the whole answer.
Difficulty solving problems
If foundational skills are missing, word problems and multi-step questions can feel overwhelming. Students may try to copy what the teacher does without really understanding why it works.
Trouble following the teacher’s explanations
When a lesson assumes prior knowledge your child does not have, it can feel like the teacher is skipping steps.

Step-by-step to use the quizzes:
Choose the quiz for your child’s grade.
Have them complete it without a calculator (unless noted).
Review which topics they got wrong or left blank.
Start working on one topic at a time until they can answer with confidence.
You can also try asking them to “teach” you how they solved a problem. If they skip steps or can’t explain why something works, that’s another sign of a gap.

Confidence drops, and students may stop trying.
They may avoid higher-level courses, limiting post-secondary options in science, business, trades, or engineering.
The earlier you address gaps, the easier they are to fix.

Celebrate progress, no matter how small, so they can see their improvement.
